On 18th November, 2018, the Government and people of Latvia held various activities to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia, in the national capital, Riga. Thousands of people, including ordinary Latvians, Government officials and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Latvia, participated in the activities marking the occasion. At the invitation of the Latvian government, Amb. Gina Blay participated in the event. She was accompanied by Ms. Miriam Aba Arhin, First Secretary/Political and Diaspora Affairs.

The people of Latvia, marked the centenary of their independence with festivities across the country including musical concerts, military parades, and fireworks.

Amb. Gina Blay attended an Ecumenical Church Service at the Riga Dome Cathedral. This was followed by a Flower-laying Ceremony at the Freedom Monument where the Ambassador joined the Presidents of Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, Iceland and other members of the diplomatic corps to lay flowers at the Freedom Monument. She also attended the ceremonial session of the Saeima -Parliament of the Republic.

Other events included a National Armed Forces Parade at the Embankment of the 11th of November and an Anniversary Concert at the Latvian National Theatre. This was followed by a reception hosted by Latvian President, Mr. Raimonds Vejonis, and an official address by the President to the Latvian people. The occasion was crowned with celebratory fireworks in the late evening of same day.

Ghana’s participation in the celebrations was an important step in our efforts to improve bilateral relations with Latvia. It is also worth highlighting, that Ghana was one of two members of the African diplomatic corps represented at the event, making our participation significant.
