PUBLIC NOTICE

27th December to Friday, 29th December 2023.

Please be informed that the Ghana Embassy in Berlin will be undergoing necessary maintenance
works from Wednesday, 27th December to Friday, 29th December 2023. During this period, the
embassy premises will be closed to the public, and no consular services will be available.
Please note that the embassy will also be closed for the New Year holiday and will resume its full
operations on Tuesday, 2nd January 2024.

Guidelines for Passport Applicants

Under current law, applicants must be Ghanaian nationals, and evidence of Ghanaian citizenship will be required in the form of an expired passport, Ghanaian Birth Certificate or citizenship ID card.

Applicants holding only Ghanaian Birth Certificates will further undergo an interview to ascertain their true Ghanaian nationality.

Applications for missing passports must be supported with a sworn affidavit with the HIGH COURT SEAL from Ghana indicating passport number if possible, how the passport got missing, place and date of issue as well as bio-data of the applicant.

Proxy Passports

It is not permitted by law for Ghanaians resident outside Ghana to acquire Ghana passports through friends and relatives in Ghana. The German authorities will seize such PROXY passports.

Any proxy passport that comes into the possession of the Embassy shall immediately be confiscated and canceled.

PUBLIC NOTICE

      It has been observed that the dispatch of the Embassy’s mails bearing ordinary stamps are fraught with delays by Deutche Post.
2.   In view of this, the Embassy wishes to advice all visa and passport applicants to use the Einschreiben or the Express services instead of the ordinary stamps when submitting self-addressed envelopes for delivery of requested services.
3.   Meanwhile, the Embassy is negotiating with the authorities to address the challenges. We apologize for any inconveniences the situation may have caused.

Passport Application Requirements

MACHINE-READABLE PASSPORT:

The following are to be provided by applicants:

  1. A fully completed form with signature and thumbprint;
  2. Four (4) biometric passport pictures;
  3. The current passport or birth certificate;
  4. Photocopy of the current passport (page containing personal data);
  5. An applicant who has no proof of the travel document with which he/she entered the country must support the application with an affidavit from the High Court sworn on his/her behalf in Ghana by a close relative. The affidavit should indicate whether the applicant has acquired a passport before or not and if missing, indicate the passport number supported by an attestation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Accra. Alternatively, applicants could support their applications with a ¨Duldung¨ or temporary stay permit.
  6. In most cases, an interview would be necessary;
  7. A photocopy of the receipt for the processing fee;
  8. Any supporting documents in respect of for example profession, or a copy of the passport of a parent in support of children’s applications.
  9. A self-addressed envelope affixed with not less than EUR 4.20 worth of postage stamps. The envelope must bear the name of the applicant even if he/she is not the principal recipient.
  10. All applicants are to comply and carefully note the above requirements to enable the Embassy process and issue your passport on time.

Dual Citizenship Requirements

Ghanaians who have acquired German Citizenship through a German parent or having been born to a Ghanaian parent who his / her to had been granted German Resident permit for eight (8) years, are eligible to apply for Ghan Dual Citizenship and to hold the Ghana passport indefinitely, as stated in the German Nationality Act section4(3). Holding the Dual Citizenship Act of 2001 (Act 591) of the laws of Ghana.

Guideline:

Applicants are required to purchase a Dual Citizenship Application form at the cost of one hundred and twenty Euros (120 EUROS) at the Ghana Embassy in Berlin. The form has to be fully completed before submission to the Mission for onward transmission to the Ministry of Interior in Accra.

Requirements:

A completed application form is to be accompanied by:

  1. Six (6) passport size photographs of the applicant
  2. A photocopy of the applicant’s German Identity Card or German passport
  3. The Birth Certificate of the applicant
  4. Evidence of Ghanaian Nationality (parents’ Ghan passport / Identity Card)
  5. Contact phone numbers of the applicant and parents
  6. Names, addresses and phone numbers of two (2) Ghanaian relatives residing in Ghana
  7. Photocopy of the receipt issued when the application form was purchased

 

Other Matters

Prospective applicants who live outside Berlin should pay an amount of one hundred and twenty euros (120 Euros) into the Mission’s Account with a reference requesting for the Dual Citizenship Application form. The process of issuing the Dual Citizenship Certificate takes approximately six (6) months.

On acquiring the dual citizenship, a holder will be entitled to apply for Ghanaian passport in addition to the German passport. it must be noted, however, that it is an offence  for a Dual Citizenship Holder to use the two (2) passports interchangeably to deceive an immigration officer. the holder must travel on one 1) passport at a time.
